The position of left back was a tough one for me when selecting this side. But in the end I decided to pick my first Canadian of the team, 20 year old Sam Akekugbe. Akekugbe was born in London England and he had spent time with Charlton Athletic. At the age of 9 his family was to leave England and move to Calgary Canada where he was to continue his development.
Adekugbe joined Vancouver on the Roster and he was registered as a homegrown player in 2013, he would go on to make his debut that season. He has been gradually making his way through the youth teams and during 2015 Adekugbe has been getting more regular appearances in the first team, although unfortunately he did suffer a long term injury. He has also played in the CONCACAF Champions League this season, which shows just how rapidly his ability is increasing.
At international level Adekugbe has chosen to represent Canada. He had managed a handful of games for the Canadian youth levels, but recently due to his good form he was called up and gained his first International Cap for Canada in September 2015.
Adekugbe looks to have good pace and strength for a young attacking fullback. I have seen clips of him striding past players whilst also not afraid to turn skillfully on the ball. He certainly seems to have good control and technique and hopefully if he can remain injury free he will develop in to a fine player.
In order to further his development Adekugbe has been spending time training with Brighton during the MLS closed season. This can only be a good thing as Brighton are a side that like to play technical football so this will have aided his development. All Adekugbe has to do now is to continue to play regular football for Vancouver and build on his first international cap.
At FanFormation we really like the look of Adekugbe, we just hope he can stay injury free.
