My second choice centre back is a player who is yet to make at his club or national side, but he has bags of potential. The player I have selected is Danny Barbir of West Bromwich Albion. He was born in Atlanta to a Romanian Dad so he also has a duel nationality although he has previously turned down call-ups form Romania.
It was reported that when Barbir moved to Europe he had interested from a host of clubs and he ended up choosing Manchester City. This however was a short lived agreement, with Barbir choosing to move to West Brom. I think this is a very cleaver move as not many young players have the opportunities to make it through at Clubs like Manchester City where money is no object.
Although he is yet to make an appearance for West Brom he is progressing well through the youth academy and surely he will start getting his opportunities soon. He is 193cm tall but also physically very strong for some who is just 17 years old. Barbir has very good pace for a centre back and from what I have seen he does like to make striding runs forward. He is not just good athletically though, Barbir has been described a centre back who can also play in midfield. This is down to his technical ability and also because he is very good with the ball at his feet.
So the next steps for Barbir are certainly going to be critical. He is still young at 17, but I believe in the next few years his talent will start to shine through and he will become a very good young centre back for West Brom. It maybe benefitial that he goes on Loan initially to gain some critical first team experience. It is not just West Brom who will benefit from his development but also the USA who have some good young players coming through.
At FanFormation we will be keeping a close eye on this very talented defender.
