Alejandro Grimaldo García was born in València on the 20th September 1995. He is not the tallest footballer at only 170cm although this is not critical to his left back position.
Grimaldo is a player who has bags of potential, although he has failed like many to force his way in to potentially one of the best teams in the world Barcelona. He is one of the golden generation that was coming through at the Camp Nou that included the likes of Sandro, Munir and Samper to name a few. It is no wonder that the fans of Barcelona saw this youngster as a massive prospect for the future.
Grimaldo made his debut for Barcelona B at the age of 16 during a 4-0 victory. Although he has yet to feature for the first team but has established himself in the Barcelona B team and also taken the captains armband. Whilst Barcelona B were playing in the Segunda division this was good for his development. Following the relegation of Barcelona B and lack of First team actions Grimaldo was forced to look elsewhere.
On the international stage Grimaldo has been playing at youth level for some time and was part of the u19s team that lifted the U19s European Championship. He has since managed to step up to the 21st but has so far only managed to make 1 appearance.
Now I have been watching this young players career closely and have seen some of the biggest clubs in Europe linked with his signature so I was surprise to see him sign for Benfica during the January Transfer window for just €1.5m, which seems an absolute bargain. From what I have seen in various forums and reports this has not gone down well with the Barcelona Fans as he really was one for the future. Now I was in no way being critical of Benfica because they are a big club, I was just expecting him to move to either stay in La Liga or move to the Premiership or Bundersliga, where it was reported clubs were keeping a close eye.
If I were to describe Grimaldo I would say he is an impressive young left back who is very good at not only defending but also striding forward to join the attack. Grimaldo has excellent physical attributes, which help him cover allot of ground during matches. Also due to his exposure at Barcelona he also has the pedigree that allows him to have good composure and technical abilities.
The Benfica fans have a lot to look forward to with this signing and he will go on to be a very good purchase for the club.
Unfortunately for Barcelona this is the one that got away, but like players who leave Barcelona at a young age there is always a good chance they will return.
